Over 4,400 solar panels will be installed on the bridge above the station and they are expected to generate half of the station's energy.
When completed in mid 2012 the bridge will house 6,000 square metres of photovoltaic panels, making it London's largest solar development.
"Blackfriars Bridge is an ideal location for solar; a new, iconic large roof space, right in the heart of London," said Derry Newman, chief executive of the solar energy company Solarcentury.
The development will also include rain harvesting systems and sun pipes for natural lighting in a bid by Network Rail to reduce carbon emissions by 25% per passenger kilometre by 2020.
The solar panels for Blackfriars station were funded through the Department for Transport’s safety and environment fund.
