Marco Polo Battersea site is ready for development

Developer Marcus Cooper Group has been granted planning permission for its £500 million redevelopment of Marco Polo House in Battersea, south west London. The developer is now seeking a funding partner for the scheme.

The proposed development would include 600,000 square feet of mixed-use space with 456 new homes including affordable units, in addition to new retail units, offices and cafes, with new parking facilities.

The site is located on the former headquarters of shopping channel QVC and has been designed by architects Scott Brownrigg. Under the proposals the current office block will be demolished and replaced with two new buildings.

The London Borough of Wandsworth recommended approval of the proposals at a planning Committee meeting on 19 January. The proposals will, however, be subject a possible request from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for the Secretary of State to “call in” the scheme.

The HSE previously raised concerns about the proximity of the proposed scheme to Battersea’s large gasholder but have reportedly been comforted by plans to decommission the gas holder and a phased approach towards the scheme.
