Plans submitted for Tower Hamlets' £500m Robin Hood Estate

An outline planning application has been submitted for the regeneration of the Blackwall Reach area, including the controversial Robin Hood Estate in Tower Hamlets in London.

The regeneration scheme has been proposed by a joint venture between Countryside Properties and Swan Housing, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) said.

The proposals include the demolition of the estate and the construction of 1,700 new homes, about 700 of which would be made available for social rent and shared ownership. The plans also propose new shops and improvements to public realm.

The scheme has been developed alongside a consultation process between the joint venture developers, Tower Hamlets Council, the Homes and Communities Agency and the local community.

Under the scheme, local council tenants and local home owners would be provided with new homes, new community facilities would be provided, a mosque would be relocated and funding would be provided for the expansion of a local school.

"We believe that the outline application represents an excellent opportunity to improve the quality of life for local people in the Blackwall Reach area," said HCA London director Jackie Jacob. "The proposal corresponds with our commitment to supporting the highest quality design and putting residents’ needs at the forefront of delivering new homes."

The outline plan will be followed up shortly by a detailed application for phase one of the scheme, according to the HCA.
