Chelsea FC submits bid for Battersea Power Station

Chelsea Football Club has confirmed that it has submitted an offer to buy the Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station site in Wandsworth, south London.

Chelsea FC has submitted its bid with property development partner Almacantar to buy the site which it said has the potential to become one of "the most iconic football stadiums in the world".

The Club has worked with architects and planning experts to develop a plan to preserve all the "significant aspects" of the 39 acre Battersea Power Station site.

Plans include building a "world-class" stadium with a capacity of 60,000 seats, the football club said. Plans also include the full restoration of the former power station's four chimneys and wash towers and the restoration of the Grade II* listed west turbine hall and control room.

Following consultation with fans, the Club has proposed a rectangular shaped stadium with four separate stands. The initial plan would be to build a 15,000 all seated one tier stand behind the south goal, likely to be the biggest one tier stand in football, the Club said. The design also includes a bigger family area than Chelsea's current club and more room for disabled supporters.

The Club has reiterated that it is only an interested party and there is no certainty that it will be successful in its bid. The sale has been run using a sealed bids system, meaning there is no confirmation of other bidders or their offers and therefore no guarantee that Chelsea's offer will be accepted.

"Our joint bid was submitted in accordance with the sales process established by the Joint Administrators for the site. The process could run for a number of months," the Club said.

In addition to the proposed new stadium, plans include a new town centre with retail shops, affordable housing and offices.

The Club has also pledged to make a significant contribution towards the Northern Line Extension, a new high-volume transport link proposed for the area.
