University of London lodges plans for 1,200 student beds

University of London and its partners University Partnerships Programme have submitted a planning application to Camden Council for the redevelopment of the Garden Halls at Cartwright Gardens in London's Bloomsbury.

Under the proposals, the existing student halls at Garden Halls would be modernised and enhanced, including the construction of a new building. The total number of student beds the building can accommodate will be increased from around 900 to 1,200.

The plans also propose to open up Cartwright Gardens to the public during daylight hours. "We feel that open spaces, like this, should be enjoyed by everyone," the University said in its proposals.

The University said that the existing buildings were "coming to the end of their design life" and that the redevelopment would "raise the quality of our accommodation, improve the architectural quality and environmental performance of the building".

The University also said the development would help reduce pressure on the private rented sector within Camden.

Subject to the Council granting permission for the plans, construction is expected to start next year.
