The Greater London Authority (GLA) has notified the City of London Corporation that it may determine US insurer WR Berkley's planning application for a 38-storey skyscraper at Lime Street.

Deputy Mayor Ed Lister said in the GLA's Stage 2 report on the plans that he was "content" to allow the City of London to determine the case itself. Approval by the City of London will be subject to any action that the Secretary of State may take.

The City of London's planning committee resolved to grant planning permission to the scheme last month following recommendations by the City's planning officers. The officers said that the proposed tower would "contribute to the richness of architecture in the City and to the area's character in general".

The proposed building, dubbed the 'Scalpel', will be located at 52-54 Lime Street. It will reach 206 metres in height and provide 58,197 square metres of office space as well as shops, restaurants and new public space.

WR Berkley announced last week that it had appointed Cushman and Wakefield as its letting agent for the building. It will take up around a quarter of the office space itself to function as its European headquarters.

Work on the building is expected to start by the end of the year.
