West Berkshire Council is consulting on its community infrastructure levy (CIL), with proposed rates ranging from £75 per square metre to £125 per sq m.

The Council's preliminary draft charging schedule (PDCS) (10-page / 513KB PDF) sets out proposals to divide the Council's administrative area into two residential charging zones.

One zone covers Newbury & Thatcham as well as the "Eastern Urban Area" and is subject to a proposed rate of £75 per sq m. The other zone covers East Kennet Valley and the "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" and is subject to a proposed rate of £125 per sq m.

For retail developments, the Council has proposed a flat rate of £125 per sq m. A proposed zero rate levy will apply to all other types of development, including business development, hotels, residential institutions and community uses.

The consultation is open until 2 April. The Council said it expects to adopt CIL by March next year.
