Bow Street Magistrate's Court to undergo £20m hotel redevelopment

Westminster City Council's planning committee this week resolved to grant planning permission for the conversion of Bow Street Magistrate's Court in London's Covent Garden into a luxury hotel.

Under the plans, the Grade II listed former court and police station will be refurbished and extended to transform it into a 99-bedroom hotel with two restaurants and a bar. Four of the bedrooms in the hotel will be created from existing police cells. The building will also have a police museum at ground floor within the former police station cell block.

The police station has been vacant since 1992 and the court has been vacant since 2006 following 267 years of operation.

The application for the redevelopment has been revised to increase the size of the proposed police museum following deferral of the plans by the planning committee in July.

Grant of planning permission will be subject to the completion of a Section 106 Agreement to secure financial contributions of £696,129 towards the Council's affordable housing fund; £603,871 towards public realm works in the area surrounding the site and £446,100 towards Crossrail.
