EDI Group submits plans for 687,000 sq ft Edinburgh regeneration scheme

Developer EDI Group announced via social media on 8 July that it has submitted an application for permission in principle to the City of Edinburgh Council for a major redevelopment scheme for the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh.

According to community consultation boards (11-page / 6.3 MB PDF) produced by EDI for a public event in March, the developer intends to create "a mixed-use development which will include retail, housing, leisure and community uses" on an 8.5 acre brownfield south of Dundee Street and Fountainbridge near Edinburgh city centre.

Commercial and cultural space is planned along the Union Canal to the south of the scheme, with residential units in a mix of tenures proposed along Viewforth to the west and Dundee Street to the northwest of the site.

The Estates Gazette reported that the scheme will provide 687,000 square feet of floor space and proposals include "350 homes, a 130-bedroom hotel, offices and 48,200 sq ft of shops, cafes and restaurants".

“These plans for a mixed-use site of this scale in the heart of Edinburgh represent an incredible opportunity for inward investors and companies looking for new premises," said Lynn Smith, senior development manager at EDI Group, according to the Estates Gazette report.

“Well-connected and representative of the feedback we’ve received locally, we know there is demand for the housing type and tenure we’ve proposed and, indeed, more retail facilities in the west end of Edinburgh," said Smith.
