Wandsworth resolves to grant planning permission for Battersea Power Station third phase plans

The London Borough of Wandsworth has resolved to grant planning permission for The Battersea Power Station Development Company's (BPSDC) detailed plans for the third phase of its redevelopment of Battersea Power Station in the Nine Elms area of London.

The third phase plans will guide development either side of a new high street, to be known as 'The Electric Boulevard', to the south and south-east of the Power Station building. Proposals for the Foster + Partners-designed eastern stretch of the High Street include 617 homes, 103 of which would be affordable, within a single, 17-storey 'wave shaped' building. The building would also incorporate a 167-room hotel, a health clinic, ground floor retail units and a roof garden.

Gehry Partners designed the western stretch of the high street, for which five buildings between 16 and 17 storeys high are proposed. Under the plans, the buildings would contain 688 homes, ground floor retail and food and drink space and a "community hub".

BPSDC's application was on the agenda for a meeting of the Borough's planning applications committee last week. A planning officer's report, recommending that planning permission be granted, said:

"The applicant is to be commended on the world-class design and architecture within the Phase 3 proposals, along with the high quality external appearance of the proposed buildings and landscaping. The high quality and innovative designs from the Battersea based and world renowned Foster + Partners, and the exuberant and exhilarating design of Frank Gehry Partners, would be welcome additions to the Borough."

The plans are part of the wider Battersea Power Station masterplan, which comprises more than 3,400 homes as well as offices, shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, community and leisure facilities and 18 acres of open space.
