Deputy chief executive officer Isabelle Kocher told reporters that the group would have a generating capacity from renewables of 21 gigawatts by the end of 2015 and is accelerating investment in renewables, Reuters reported.
"Nearly half of the capacity that we are developing is in renewables, which are not marginal but totally central for GDF Suez," Kocher said.
GDF Suez is extending its renewables business beyond Europe. Earlier this month, the group said the Kathu Solar Park project in South Africa, owned by a GDF Suez led consortium with South African partners, had been nominated as a ‘preferred bidder’ by the South African Department of Energy.
Kathu is a 100-megawatt greenfield concentrated solar power project with parabolic trough technology and equipped with a molten salt storage system that allows 4.5 hours of thermal energy storage. It is situated in the Northern Cape province, 600 km south-west of the capital Pretoria.
