Salford City Council has resolved to grant planning permission for the redevelopment of a site in Greater Manchester's Salford Quays into a private rented sector (PRS) scheme with up to 665 homes, according to a report in the Estates Gazette.

Property development group Amstone Developments submitted plans to the Council in October, proposing the demolition of a vacant multiplex cinema at Clippers Quay and the construction of five residential blocks, between eight and 11 storeys in height. The upper storeys of the blocks would house between 614 and 665 apartments, with car parking and 17,000 square feet of retail space proposed for the ground floors.

The plans were on the agenda for discussion at a meeting of the Council's planning and transportation regulatory panel last week, having been recommended for approval in a planning officer's report.

According to the Estate's Gazette, the panel voted in favour of granting full planning permission for the 208-home first phase of development and outline permission for the remainder of the scheme.

“This approval is a very positive step towards achieving Amstone’s ambitions in this new economic cycle to focus towards PRS development in the North West," said Amstone Developments operations director Martin Halsey, according to the report.

“Amstone is well funded as a group with access to significant private equity funds," said Halsey. "Our Clippers Quay scheme provides us with the launch pad to roll out our PRS urban village concept in other North West locations in the future.”
