HP dividing up IT estate as part of company split

Computing giant Hewlett Packard (HP) is dividing up its legacy IT estate as part of moves to split its business into two separate companies, a senior HP executive has said.

HP is in the process of splitting into two businesses, HP Inc. and HP Enterprise, following an announcement of the demerger last October. HP Inc. will comprise the company's computer and printer businesses whilst Hewlett-Packard Enterprise will consist of the company's technology infrastructure, software and services businesses. The split is scheduled to become effective on 1 November.

John Hinshaw, executive vice president of technology and operations at HP, said that as part of that split, HP needs to divide up the company's IT networks and data centres, as well as 2,800 applications and 75,000 application interfaces, according to a report by The Channel.

"What we've done over the past couple of years is consolidate our infrastructure, consolidate our data centres, consolidate our applications to get ready for something like this," Hinshaw said, according to The Channel's report. He said the company is aiming for the split to be operational by the beginning of August before it takes full effect in November.

"We want to ensure that we fully test the environment for three months before we separate," Hinshaw said, according to The Channel. "This will be one of the largest separations ever … We're documenting everything we're doing throughout this process, so we can share that with all of you who might have to go through the same thing down the road."
