UK government commissions independent review of 'feasibility' of tidal lagoon power

The UK government has commissioned an independent review into the "feasibility and practicality" of tidal lagoon power as a means of future energy generation for the UK.

The review will begin in the spring and involve prospective UK tidal lagoon energy developers as well as relative government departments, according to the announcement.

Energy minister Lord Bourne said that the government hoped to establish the cost of developing tidal lagoon technology and its potential impact on consumer bills.

"Tidal lagoons on this scale are an exciting, but as yet an untested technology," he said.

"This review will help give us that clarity [over costs] so we can determine what role tidal lagoons could have as part of our plans to provide secure, clean and affordable energy for families and businesses across the country," he said.

The review group will also be asked to establish the potential scale of opportunity for tidal lagoon technology in the UK and internationally, including for the supply chain; and to set out a range of possible structures for financing tidal lagoon projects.
