New affordable housing supplementary planning guidance to be published

London's deputy mayor has announced plans to publish new supplementary planning guidance setting out a clear approach to assessing the level of affordable housing.

Last month, deputy mayor James Murray spoke at the London Assembly's planning committee meeting. He said that London mayor Sadiq Khan is "keen to get some supplementary planning guidance out ... to give certainty to the development industry on the requirements and processes around affordable housing", according to a report by Planning.

Murray stated that this guidance would be published before the full review of the London Plan and it would offer clarity and certainty in relation to affording housing contributions and "address the concern that people have over the confusion arising from viability assessments", according to Planning's report.

It was also recently announced that the current Hackney mayor, Jules Pipe, has been appointed as deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills. According to a statement from Sadiq Khan, "Jules will lead on the revision of the London Plan and work closely with James Murray, deputy mayor for housing and residential development, to tackle the city’s housing crisis" as well as "major regeneration projects across the capital".
