Domain names now available in 60 new languages

OUT-LAW News, 26/02/2001

Network Solutions Inc., the largest domain name registrar, is from today accepting domain name registrations in more than 60 new languages from Eastern and Western Europe, such as Russian, German, French, Swedish and Spanish.

Until today, domain names have been available with only English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean accents and characters. Some foreign companies had to change their brand names to fit with .com naming restrictions.

The new names can be purchased from today but, due to testing requirements, the names cannot be used for a period of two or three months.

The internet has been criticised for being “too English.” According to FT.com, 75% of all pages on the web are in English yet it is the first language of only around 5% of the world’s population.
