RIM gets wireless e-mail patent and sues rival

OUT-LAW News, 18/05/2001

Research in Motion (RIM) of Canada yesterday announced it has secured a US software patent for redirecting information between a host system, such as an office PC or server and a mobile device such as a PDA (personal digital assistant) while maintaining their single, existing e-mail address and mailbox.

RIM, which makes the popular Blackberry two-way pagers, has also filed a lawsuit against Glenayre, a small US maker of wireless messaging products, arguing that “Glenayre is a blatant imitator of Blackberry.”

According to RIM, Glenayre uses RIM’s trade mark, “Always On, Always Connected” which RIM wants to licence to others. According to reports, the lawsuit alleges trade mark and patent infringement.
