Playboy.com data hacked

OUT-LAW News, 21/11/2001

Playboy.com has been the victim of a malicious hack attack and has warned customers that this may have resulted in the exposure of their credit card details. Playboy.com has said that although the scope of the attack has yet to be determined, law enforcement officials are investigating the security breach.

The attack became apparent after several registered users received an e-mail from a person claiming to be the hacker which displayed their confidential credit card details. According to news service Reuters, the e-mail also listed a number of warnings for on-line customers and companies including “do not trust companies with your details on-line.”

Mark Shaw, a director of Edinburgh-based commissum, an information assurance business, told OUT-LAW.COM:

"There is no good reason why the information held by Playboy.com should have been so vulnerable. If they had a secure environment, which can be achieved with the right technology and understanding, this would not have happened. There are a lot of big organisations using the internet who have poor security. They need to sort it out for the sake of their credibility and client confidence"
