US cyber security receives boost

OUT-LAW News, 08/02/2002

A huge majority of members of the US House of Representatives has voted in favour of the Cyber Security Research and Development Act. The bill was passed allocating $880m to government agencies to carry out extensive research into ways of improving computer security in the US.

Ultimately this investment will be used to improve techniques to protect the infrastructure systems currently in place which are open to attack from, for example, viruses and computer hackers. However, the research will also look at ways to protect US technology from threats made by hostile countries.

There is an increasing awareness about the vulnerability of users to breaches in cyber security, and in particular the home user and small business. The public and private sector are working together to educate these user groups, and have set up staysafeonline.info, a web site with information and advice on recommended security measures.
