Both Sony and Microsoft are already working on the next
iteration of their rival games consoles. The chief technical
officer for Sony Computer Entertainment this week told a games
conference that the PlayStation 3 will use a form of distributed
computing to boost performance, according to CNet news.
Shin’ichi Okamoto told attendees at the annual Game Developers
Conference that chip speeds are accelerating too slowly for Sony’s
liking. Instead, distributed computing will be used, which will
involve networked consoles sharing software, processing power and
data.
Meanwhile, a research note from Boston investment bank Fechtor
Detwiler is quoted by The Register.co.uk, speculating that
Microsoft will abandon Intel as chip provider for its Xbox 2 in
favour of chip rival AMD.
