FBI arrests 27 software pirates

OUT-LAW News, 22/04/2002

The FBI last week arrested 27 individuals, mostly in Silicon Valley, who are alleged to be responsible for the largest criminal conspiracy in the history of the software industry following a two-year undercover investigation called Operation Cyberstorm.

The investigation uncovered a conspiracy involving the sale and distribution of counterfeit and infringing software, mostly Microsoft products, money laundering, credit card fraud and fraud against the academic community.

The losses to Microsoft alone are estimated to be several hundred million dollars.
