In April 2002, job cuts were 95% lower than the dot.com
job-cutting peak of 17,554 recorded in April 2001, according to a
survey released by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an
international outplacement firm.
For the second time in three months, dot.com job cuts fell below
1,000, as internet firms announced 824 job cuts in April 2002, down
47% from 1,549 in March. April 2002 marked the fifth time in six
months that the total was lower than the previous month, according
to the survey. It was two years ago since job cuts were only three
digits. The April 2000 figure was 327.
The April figure brings announced dot.com job cuts for the year
to 4,845. Since the Challenger firm started tracking dot.com job
cuts in December, 1999, announced cuts have reached 147,285.
