A generic top level domain for the aviation industry, the
internet’s first industry-specific domain, completed its roll-out
today as restrictions limiting the choice of names to trade marks
and registered entity names were lifted.
The domain began its roll-out in March 2002 for the airline and airports sectors and registrations are now being accepted from pilots, aviation media, charter operators, air tours, aerospace and aviation suppliers.
Almost 2,000 .aero domain names have been registered, including virgin.aero, rollsroyce.aero and dublinairport.aero. The names are currently being offered by only six registrars, authorised by the global aviation industry body SITA.
