MGM launches on-line casino from Isle of Man

OUT-LAW News, 04/10/2002

Las Vegas resort operator MGM Mirage last week became the first major US casino to go on-line. However, Playmgmirage.com, an “interactive entertainment and gaming web site,” is operating not from the US, but from the Isle of Man, which has already licensed four other internet casinos.

The on-line casino is open to anyone, but only residents of the UK, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, South Africa and New Zealand are allowed to gamble with money. Residents from the US, where federal law prohibits the use of the internet for betting, are excluded.

According to the Associated Press, five different companies are working for MGM to verify the age and residency of potential bettors.
