Wireless keyboard transmits too far

OUT-LAW News, 07/11/2002

Two Norwegian neighbours have discovered a serious security flaw in a Hewlett-Packard wireless keyboard, according to a report by the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten which was picked up by TheRegister.co.uk.

P. A. Evjeberg and P. E. Helle found that text being typed by Evjeberg on his wireless keyboard was being transmitted to Helle's computer, in another building.

When the incident was reported to HP, the neighbours had their equipment replaced. However, according to Aftenposten, the problem with the keyboard typing to the wrong screen continues.

Helle, whose apartment is 150 meters and at least two walls away from his neighbour's flat told the newspaper: "It isn't [Evjeberg's] keyboard that is the problem, it is the keyboard in general. HP must realise that the sender is emitting far too powerful signals. Users have basically no control over who receives the signals."
