RIAA prompts US Navy to seize computers

OUT-LAW News, 25/11/2002

Officials at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, have seized around 100 midshipmen's computers that allegedly contained downloads of copyrighted music and movies, according to media reports.

The Academy has reportedly confirmed the incident but declined further comment until an investigation into the matter is completed. The Academy also said that punishment for illegal possession of copyrighted material could range from a court-martial to loss of leave and other restrictions.

The action was apparently prompted by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which, on 3rd October, sent letters to US colleges and universities asking them to take measures against on-line piracy.
