Top internet searches for 2002

OUT-LAW News, 19/12/2002

Search engines Lycos and Google have compiled their lists of the top internet searches over the course of 2002. Google users made 55 billion searches over the year, or 150 million per day, according to the company. Both sets of results have been censored for decency, however.

Lycos compiled its top 10 search terms as follows (last year's ranking in brackets):

  1. Dragonball (1)
  2. KaZaA (64)
  3. Tattoos (4)
  4. Britney Spears (2)
  5. Morpheus (21)
  6. NFL (16)
  7. IRS (6)
  8. Halloween (20)
  9. Christmas (17)
  10. Pamela Anderson (11)

Dragonball, the top-ranked search term, is a Japanese animation; but a notable omission is the word "sex." It is said to be the internet's most popular search term; but both Google and Lycos omitted this and anything else deemed offensive from their family-friendly results.

Google compiled its "2002 Year-End Zeitgeist" in a number of categories – athletes (David Beckham at number one), gaining categories (Spiderman), declining categories (Nostradamus), top men (Eminem), top women (Jennifer Lopez), brands (Ferrari), technology (MP3).
