Until now only third level domains, such as .com.hk or .org.hk,
have been available for registration. The Hong Kong Internet
Registration Corporation is to launch the new second level domain
in phases, with priority being given to trade mark holders and
those who already hold third level .hk domains.
From 17th to 28th May a public sunrise registration period is
due to operate. Normally a sunrise period allows trade mark holders
to pre-register, under the condition that they prove their existing
rights within a four week period. If they cannot comply, the names
are then released for others to register.
On this occasion, the sunrise period is for members of the
public, and provides that where several people try to register the
same domain, the domain shall be awarded at random to one of the
registrants.
The domain is due to become live – with registrations taking
place on a first-come, first-served basis – on 31st May.
