Simple .name domain names available

OUT-LAW News, 15/01/2004

Personal domain names are now more readily available on-line following the introduction of second level domain names by .name operator the Global Name Registry. Until now the registry could only register personalised addresses in the form www.joe.bloggs.name.

The compulsory dot between first and last name made the domain unpopular. However, it will now be possible to register in the format www.joe.name.

Hakon Haugnes, President of Global Name Registry says:

"This is extremely important for individuals using the internet because their names are long gone on .com. Most individuals in most countries worldwide today find their names taken by a company. There must be a space for individuals on the internet, and that is why we created .name. The opening of .name as an address space for individuals will provide a fantastic, dedicated new space where names again will be available."

Global Name Registry is working with accredited registrars worldwide, and as from yesterday several Registrars began rolling out the personalised addresses.
