AOL sued over chatroom monitor

OUT-LAW News, 18/04/2005
AOL has been sued by a woman who claims that when she was 15, one of its chatroom monitors took advantage of her on-line, exchanging nude photos with her and arranging to meet her, according to reports.

The worker was fired before the meeting took place, after a colleague became suspicious. The police and FBI were informed, although the man does not appear to have been charged.

According to Reuters, the woman, now 19, is seeking over $25,000 in damages for emotional distress, false advertising – in claiming that the chat room was safe for children – and a failure to supervise.

The lawsuit also names AOL 's parent company, Time Warner, and the individual monitor.

"You're truly looking at a situation where you have a wolf looking over the chicken coop," the woman's lawyer told the Los Angeles Times.
