Citizens Advice calls for 14-day cancellation right

OUT-LAW News, 16/01/2006

Inconsistent cancellation rights across the EU mean that UK shoppers are far worse off than most of their continental counterparts, according to a new report from Euroconsumer, the UK European Consumer Centre hosted by Citizens Advice.

UK shoppers only have seven working days in which they can cancel goods bought from a distance, for example by mail order or online. But people in Italy have 10 working days and in Germany the law allows 14 days. In all countries, there are some exceptions to the right.

"We want to see a minimum 14-day cancellation period across Europe," said UK ECC Director Ruth Bamford, adding that consistency would be far simpler for people to understand when shopping across borders.
