The UK’s Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society has introduced
a new blanket licence to enable easier access to music for use in
computer games, board games and DVDs. rates start at £1.50 for
games that use up to 150 music clips of up to 30 seconds'
duration.
The new licence covers the musical works owned by the 17,000
songwriters and composers who comprise the membership of MCPS. It
means that game producers will no longer need to seek separate
approval for each clip of music they want to use in a music quiz
game, as would have been the case in the past.
It covers games produced in any physical format where the games
are entirely music quizzes or are general quiz games with a music
section comprising at least 20% of the overall content.
Jeremy Fabinyi, Executive Director, MCPS said: "The increasing
consumer demand for interactive gaming means that music is fast
becoming an integral part of many new quiz games. Now, this
innovative new approach by MCPS means just one call gets games
producers access to over 10 million songs. Budgeting is easy, the
rates are flexible and transparent and with the removal of prior
approval, access to songs is guaranteed."
