Bookmaker has on-line advantage in Irish law

OUT-LAW News, 05/06/2000

Paddy Power, the largest bookmaker in Ireland, this week announces a new on-line betting service.

Irish betting duty was halved from 10% to 5% last year, thereby undercutting the UK’s 9% rate. By placing bets offshore, UK punters can avoid paying betting duty altogether.

In addition to traditional bookmaker services, the site will also allow people in the UK to place bets on National Lottery numbers, something which British bookmakers are not allowed to offer.

In 1999 Paddy Power turned over in excess of IR£210 million. The company was founded by Stuart Kenny in 1988. It was the first major Irish bookmaker to venture into on-line betting.
