AOL announces large profits

OUT-LAW News, 21/07/2000

America Online (AOL) has reported quarterly earnings of $334 million for the period ending 30th June. These results have been attributed to its growth in advertising, electronic commerce and subscription, as well as its planned merger with Time Warner Inc.

AOL’s number of subscribers has risen by more than 900,000 to a total of 23.2 million. The company expects these figures to continue growing in the near future, especially as it intends to launch its new ‘AOL Anywhere’ project. This will provide users with access to the internet from several different sources.

The planned merger with Time Warner Inc. may also have helped boost AOL’s profits. The deal is not expected to be completed until the autumn and it is still awaiting approval form US regulators. A public hearing is to be held next week to determine whether the merger should go ahead unopposed.
