Press code bans snooping in wake of royal eavesdrop case
The Press Complaints Commission (PCC) has explicitly banned digital snooping by journalists in a change to its Code of Practice. The move comes in the wake of journalist Clive Goodman's conviction for eavesdropping on royal staff members' phone messages.

YouTube copyright fight hinges on whether it controls its content, says US court
The first stage in the first copyright infringement suit against video sharing giant YouTube has ended in stalemate. Both sides in the fight applied for an initial judgment against the other, but neither was granted and the case will now proceed further.

MPs slam Government FOI proposals
The Government's plans to limit requests under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act should be blocked, according to a parliamentary committee. It also said that watchdog the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) should be better funded.

EU search engine probe expands beyond Google
European privacy regulators will expand their investigation into Google's privacy practices to all search engine companies, it has said.

Customers must be told of US bank transaction monitoring, say privacy chiefs
Privacy chiefs have given Europe's banks a September deadline for alerting customers that their financial transactions could be tracked by US security agencies. Customers must be warned that even transactions within Europe could be monitored, they said.

Ofcom hands out biggest ever fine over fake TV phone in winners
Channel 5 has been hit with a £300,000 fine by regulator Ofcom in what is the biggest payout by a public service broadcaster to the regulator. It was found to have faked winners in live call-in competitions.
