German law bans Facebook research for hiring decisions
Employers in Germany will be allowed to enter job applicants' names into search engines and professional networking sites but must not look at their profiles on Facebook, under a draft law that was approved by the Federal Cabinet yesterday.

Court of Appeal questions brand owners' rights to block parallel imports
Brand owners may have less power to prevent sales in Europe of goods intended for other markets after a ruling by England's Court of Appeal this week. The judgment over the sale of Sun-branded disk drives is likely to be welcomed by independent resellers.

Zurich fined £2.3m by FSA over loss of back-up tape
The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has fined Zurich Insurance £2,275,000 after a back-up tape containing unencrypted personal details on 46,000 policy holders went missing in transit. The FSA said Zurich had inadequate systems and controls in place.

OFT consults on guidance for handling competition investigations
Competition and consumer regulator the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has published draft guidance on how it conducts investigations into potential breaches of the Competition Act.

UK consults on '28th regime' for EU contracts
The UK Government has asked businesses to tell it what they think of planned changes to European law designed to make cross-border trade easier.

Facebook launches location service while activists warn of privacy danger
Facebook, the social network with over 500 million registered users, has launched a service which can tell a user's online contacts where that person is. Privacy activists have welcomed some aspects of the service but criticised others.
