Battersea site is constrained by transport, says planning expert

The architect behind the original Battersea Power Station proposals has been instructed by Chelsea football club to draw up proposals for a new stadium on the south London site.

Architect Rafael Vinoly has been instructed to draw up plans for a football stadium with a capacity of 55,000 to the south-east of the power station. But a planning expert has warned that plans for a stadium on the site are a tall order.

Richard Ford, a planning and sport and stadia expert at Pinsent Masons, the law firm behind Out-Law.com, has warned that plans for a stadium on the site could run into difficulties.

"The transport links will constrain the Battersea site until there is certainty in relation to the Northern Line tube extension. Wandsworth's clear aim of a mixed use new community for the site make it a tall order for stadium plans," said Ford.

Vinoly will draw up proposals for the site with architect Kohn Pedersen Fox, which will see a new stadium built next to the power station. The complex will include a new hotel and shops.

The London Borough of Wandsworth has plans for the site to be a new mixed used community. Previous plans included the proposed building of 3,500 new homes and neighbourhood plans.
