Government consultations launched on the revocation of regional strategies

The Government has launched a 12 week consultation on a set of environmental assessments on proposals to revoke regional strategies, as established under the Localism Bill.

Eight environmental assessments were published by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), which aim to gauge the impact of the Government's decision to abolish regional spatial strategies.

The Government hopes that the revocation of regional strategies will help to protect the greenbelt by removing housing targets on local communities.  Housing targets put pressure on councils to cut the greenbelt in 30 towns across the country, the report said.

Subject to Royal Assent of the Bill, the final abolition of each individual Regional Plan will be commenced after the assessment process has been completed.
