Ministry of Defence to release more public land and boost housebuilding

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has unveiled plans to release a second swathe of land, following the Government’s announcement to build up to 100,000 new homes on formerly used public land.

The MoD was one of the four Government departments that published plans to release disused land and property to help boost housebuilding.

The plans are being drawn up by the MoD's estates arm, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), which has already identified sites that could provide 12,500 homes.

The MoD's first strategy list identified 27 sites that the MoD intend to bring forward for disposal. The disposal strategy also stated that a second annexe to the document would be produced, which would identify additional sites.

These have not yet been published as "further estate rationalisation investigation, consultation, funding, agreement and implementation" are required, according to the report.

The strategy states that the department will need to work through the implications of last year's overarching Strategic Defence and Security Review before it can make decisions on further disposals.
