Government launches shortened, simplified planning guidance

The Government has launched a new online planning guidance resource that aims to simplify the planning process and make planning more accessible to the public.

Existing planning guidance spans 230 separate documents and was criticised by a report by Lord Taylor as being “unfit for purpose”. The new guidance aims to condense and clarify the existing guidance. None of the existing guidance will be cancelled until the new guidance is finalised.

A trial period for the online guidance started yesterday and will run for a period of six weeks. During this time members of the public can comment on the website and provide feedback on the guidance. The website is due to live in the autumn.

Lord Taylor commented "I believe that the work that has been done to reduce and revise the existing planning guidance and launch the new online resource transforms the effectiveness, accessibility and accountability of the Government’s planning guidance."
