BBC Television Centre plans approved

The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham's planning committee last night resolved to grant planning permission to developer Stanhope for a major mixed use redevelopment of the BBC Television Centre in west London's White City.

The scheme at the 14 acre site will include office and studio space for the BBC as well as up to 1,000 new homes, offices, a hotel and public open space.

The Television Centre will be opened up to the public for the first time and the forecourt will be remodelled with shops and leisure and entertainment facilities. The listed building at the Centre will be retained.

Stanhope bought the site from the BBC in 2012 and then leased back the Television Centre to the BBC until 2015, for decommissioning works. The BBC will then vacate the site, with the exception of three studios.

“This is a major milestone in the evolution of Television Centre," said Stanhope chief executive David Camp in a statement. "We look forward to getting on with creating a vibrant quarter of London at Television Centre with an exciting mix of retail, leisure, office and residential uses, including the famous BBC Studios and BBC Worldwide’s new headquarters. Television Centre will be a great place to live, work and visit.”

BBC director of operations Dominic Coles also welcomed the Council's approval. “The sale of Television Centre was a key part of the transformation of the BBC’s property portfolio which continues to save millions of pounds for licence fee payers every year. The decision last night is an important step in the regeneration of this iconic building and the BBC will continue working with Stanhope as the project develops," he said.

Enabling and infrastructure works are expected to begin next summer and demolition and building work will follow in 2015.
