Electronic visa waiver scheme available to visitors from UAE, Oman and Qatar from January

Visitors to the UK from Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be eligible for a new visa waiver programme from January, the Government has announced.

The introduction of the Electronic Visa Waiver scheme follows a 29% increase in the number of 'visit' visas granted to Middle Eastern nationals this year, according to Home Secretary Theresa May. The scheme is expected to be extended to visitors from Kuwait later in 2014, she said.

"The Government keeps visa regimes under constant review to ensure that they are aligned to risk," she said.

"The Electronic Visa Waiver scheme is another example of how UK Visas and Immigration is innovating in order to serve the needs of its customers and ensure Britain succeeds in the global race. Britain is open for business and genuine visitors and tourists coming here to enjoy our world class attractions, study or do business are always welcome," she said.

The change will be incorporated into the Immigration Rules from 1 January 2014, alongside minor amendments to the rules for armed forces and graduate entrepreneurs.

The new scheme will be available free of charge to passport holders from Oman, Qatar and the UAE; and will remove the current requirement to provide biometrics or attend a visa application centre. The visa waiver must be obtained online at least 48 hours in advance of travel to the UK, and should be presented at the request of an immigration officer on arrival in the UK. Visitors who prefer to obtain a long-term, multi-entry visit visa under the old arrangements will still be able to do so.

The change is the latest announcement as part of the Government's policy to attract more business travellers and visitors to the UK. In October, the Chancellor announced simplifications to the visa application process for Chinese visitors, alongside a new 24-hour 'super priority' visa service and 'fast track' for wealthy travellers on a visit to the country.
