Taylor Wimpey last month exchanged contracts with the BBC to buy the sites of its Broadcasting House headquarters and its Ty Oldfield premises on opposite sides of the Llantrisant Road, two miles to the west of Cardiff city centre.
The housebuilder opened a public consultation this week on plans to redevelop the site to provide around 400 new homes, in a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments and three-, four- and five-bedroom houses, following the BBC's relocation to new premises in early 2018. The proposals include 20% affordable housing provision, in line with the emerging local requirements.
The Lodge, a listed building on the Ty Oldfield site, will be retained under the plans. Improvements to the local cycle and pedestrian network are also proposed under the plans.
Taylor Wimpey South Wales land director, Gareth Hawke, said in a statement last month: "Our development will combine a mix of private and much-needed affordable homes, car parking and public open space with the first properties expected to go on sale in early 2019, following the BBC's relocation and subject to the planning process."
"The project will also provide a significant boost to the local economy, creating approximately 100 jobs in construction, and an additional 300 in the supply chain, for the duration of the build, which is expected to take four years," Hawke said.
Taylor Wimpey said an outline planning application would be submitted to Cardiff Council in February or March.
Subject to planning permission and the BBC's successful relocation, work is expected to start on site in 2018.
