UK payments processing platform Worldpay has been granted a licence to operate in Australia.

Australia is one of Asia-Pacific's largest e-commerce markets, Worldpay said, with online sales accounting for AU$42 billion (£24.8 billion) in 2015, and the country’s consumers leading the world in terms of e-wallet adoption, Worldpay said.

"Consequently, Worldpay is ideally placed to help merchants across Australia capitalise on opportunities presented by a market with high internet penetration and a technologically-savvy consumer base," it said.

ASOS, Expedia, Cathay Pacific Airlines and Digital World International are already using Worldpay for payment processing in Australia, the company said.

Worldpay processed 13.1 billion transactions in 2015 with transaction value of £401.9 billion, it said. The platform expanded into Canada in February when it won a deal to provide payment services to e-book company Rakuten Kobo.

Worldpay has recently faced technical problems  with payment settlements being delayed.
