Siemens wins €790 million substation contract in Qatar

State-owned utility Qatar General Water & Electricity Corporation (KAHRAMAA) has awarded Siemens a contract worth €790 million to expand the country’s power transmission network.

Siemens is to deliver 35 turnkey super and primary substations for phase 13 of the Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion project, Siemens Middle East said in a statement.

Siemens will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, installation, and commissioning of substations for the 400-kilovolt (Kw), 220Kv, 132Kv, 66Kv, and 11Kv voltage levels, including gas-insulated switchgear, transformers, and control and protection equipment, it said.

An existing super substation in Doha will be upgraded with new 400Kv / 220Kv gas-insulated switchgear and associated equipment and connected to the grid. Super substations allow multiple voltage settings.

Another substation will be used to meet rising demand for electricity in Al Jahhaniya and surrounding area, including temporary power feed to Rayyan Stadium, one of the venues for the upcoming world soccer championship, Siemens said.

Substations will also supply power to steel, oil and gas and petrochemical facilities, ongoing infrastructure development projects, schools, hospitals, industries and residential complexes, the company said.

Siemens has also received a second order worth around €27m from KAHRAMAA to supply and install more than 2,170 medium-voltage switchgear boards, it said. The switchgear will be manufactured in Frankfurt and the first units are expected to go into operation by the end of 2017.

Ralf Christian, chief executive of Siemens energy management division said: "Since the upgrade program started in 2005, Siemens has installed more than 120 substations and approximately 1,500 kilometres of high-voltage cable."

Doha-based energy expert Peter Blackmore of Pinsent Masons, the law firm behind Out-Law.com said: "This reflects the growth, and anticipated growth, in retail and hospitality in the lead up to the World Cup in 2022. House building also continues apace and the population continues to grow."
