Teenager arrested in connection with alleged riot-inciting social networking comments

A Fife teenager has been arrested after allegedly posting riot-inciting comments on a social networking website, police have said.

Fife Constabulary said that the 18 year-old man from Levenmouth was expected to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Monday.

The arrest is the latest in a number made by police in relation to the incitement of public disorder through social networking. Police in Glasgow, Dundee and Fife made similar arrests in connection with allegedly riot-inciting comments on Facebook.

In England two men were last week sentenced to serve four years in jail after posting comments on Facebook that could have led to a riot, even though no public disorder actually took place.

Earlier this month rioters took to the streets of some major towns and cities in England, including London, Manchester and Birmingham and orchestrated scenes of violence, looting, fire-raising and vandalism. Police said the rioters had used social media to coordinate the unlawful activity.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said individuals that use social media for violence need to be stopped.
